Portuguese Water Dog

Meet the Portuguese Water Dog

The Portuguese Water Dog, known in their native land as Cão de Água or “dog of water,” has worked alongside fishermen along the Portuguese coast for centuries. These remarkable dogs were valued for herding fish into nets, retrieving lost tackle, and serving as couriers between ships and shore. Their webbed feet and waterproof coat made them superior swimmers perfectly adapted to life at sea.

Today’s Portuguese Water Dog retains the intelligence, work ethic, and loyal disposition of their ancestors. These medium-sized dogs typically stand 17 to 23 inches tall and weigh between 35 and 60 pounds, with a lifespan of 10 to 15 years.

They possess a single-layer wavy or curly coat that does not shed. This breed gained international recognition when President Obama welcomed Bo and later Sunny to the White House, introducing millions to their charming nature.

Temperament

The Portuguese Water Dog exhibits a loyal, affectionate temperament characterized by strong bonds with family members. These dogs thrive on human companionship and prefer being involved in all household activities, a trait stemming from their history working alongside fishermen on small boats.

They are generally friendly with strangers and other pets when properly socialized, making them excellent family companions. Their alert nature renders them effective watchdogs who bark to announce visitors.

Portuguese Water Dogs demonstrate particular gentleness with children and respond sensitively to their owner’s moods. Despite their affectionate disposition, they possess an independent streak requiring consistent leadership. This breed does not tolerate extended isolation and may develop destructive behaviors when left alone too frequently.

Trainability

The Portuguese Water Dog ranks among the most intelligent canine breeds, eagerly learning and impressing in training sessions. Their working heritage makes them highly trainable with a strong desire to follow complex commands. Positive reinforcement methods yield optimal results, as these sensitive dogs respond poorly to harsh corrections.

Their intelligence, however, brings a low boredom threshold requiring varied, engaging training approaches. Early socialization and obedience training prove essential for developing confident, well-adjusted adults.

These dogs excel in obedience, agility, and service roles including hearing assistance and therapy work. Without sufficient mental stimulation, their clever minds may devise self-employed activities, particularly near water. Consistent, reward-based training transforms their independent nature into willing cooperation and impressive performance.

Grooming

The Portuguese Water Dog possesses a unique single-layer coat that does not shed, making them appropriate for owners concerned with pet allergens. This coat requires significant maintenance regardless of whether wavy or curly.

Daily brushing proves highly recommended to prevent matting and tangling that causes skin irritation. Professional grooming every six to eight weeks maintains coat condition through clipping in either traditional “lion cut” or practical “retriever cut” styles. The lion cut, with hindquarters shaved and a mane left full length, originated from fishing days to provide warmth to vitals while allowing freedom for swimming.

Without consistent grooming, the continuously growing hair impedes vision and creates discomfort. Bathing, nail trimming, ear cleaning, and dental care complete the essential routine for this high-maintenance but magnificent breed.
