West Highland White Terrier

Meet the West Highland White Terrier

The West Highland White Terrier, affectionately known as the Westie, originated in Scotland centuries ago as a tenacious hunter of fox, badger, and vermin. Their distinctive white coat resulted from careful breeding after a hunter tragically shot his brown terrier mistaking it for a fox. Colonel Edward Malcolm of Poltalloch is credited with developing the modern breed during the 1800s, initially called the Poltalloch Terrier before receiving official recognition in 1907.

Westies typically stand 10 to 11 inches tall and weigh between 15 and 22 pounds, with a lifespan of 13 to 15 years. Their harsh white double coat requires regular maintenance but sheds minimally. These compact dogs possess the classic terrier temperament, bold, confident, and always ready for adventure. Beneath that charming exterior resides a self-assured companion with abundant personality and unwavering spirit.

Temperament

The West Highland White Terrier exhibits a confident, outgoing temperament characterized by remarkable self-esteem and devotion to family. These dogs form strong bonds with their people while maintaining the independent spirit typical of terriers. They are generally good with children when properly socialized but do not tolerate rough handling. Westies possess high energy requiring daily exercise and mental stimulation.

Their alert nature makes them excellent watchdogs who enthusiastically announce visitors. Early socialization remains essential to develop well-adjusted adults. This breed thrives on human companionship and involvement in family activities and they bring endless entertainment with their playful antics and humorous expressions.

Trainability

Training a Westie requires understanding their intelligent but stubborn nature. These dogs learn quickly but apply selective hearing when commands lack motivation. Positive reinforcement utilizing high-value treats yields optimal results, as harsh corrections damage trust and cooperation. Early obedience training establishes essential manners while respecting their independent spirit.

Westies excel in canine sports including agility, earthdog trials, and obedience when properly motivated. Their intelligence requires mental stimulation through varied activities to prevent boredom. Housetraining may present challenges requiring consistency and patience. With positive, consistent guidance and realistic expectations, Westies become responsive companions who enjoy performing for rewards. They particularly enjoy digging and tracking activities that satisfy their natural hunting instincts.

Grooming

The Westie’s distinctive white double coat requires committed maintenance to remain healthy and attractive. Their harsh outer coat and soft undercoat need brushing two to three times weekly to prevent matting and remove loose hair. Professional grooming every six to eight weeks maintains coat condition, with show dogs requiring hand-stripping while pets are typically clipped.

Their white coat shows dirt readily, though the texture causes mud to brush off easily when dry. Regular ear cleaning proves essential to prevent infection. Nail trimming every three to four weeks, dental care, and wiping around eyes complete the essential routine for this charming breed.

Owners should check between paw pads regularly for debris caught in the hair growing there.
