Yorkshire Terrier

Meet the Yorkshire Terrier

The Yorkshire Terrier, affectionately known as the Yorkie, originated in 19th-century England where Scottish weavers brought terriers to Yorkshire and crossed them with local breeds to create a small dog capable of catching rats in clothing mills. This working-class background shaped the breed’s confident, determined nature that persists today despite their transition to beloved companions.

Yorkies typically stand 7 to 8 inches tall and weigh 7 pounds or under, with a lifespan of 11 to 15 years. Their most distinctive feature is the long, silky, floor-length coat that parts down the middle, colored steel blue and tan.

Puppies are born black and tan, gradually developing adult coloration by age two or three. Beneath that glamorous exterior resides a true terrier, bold, energetic, and utterly convinced of their own importance. These tiny dogs possess enormous personalities and form intense bonds with their special humans.

Temperament

The Yorkshire Terrier exhibits a bold, affectionate, and energetic temperament characterized by confidence completely disproportionate to their tiny size. These dogs form intense attachments to their families and often bond most deeply with one special person, following them devotedly throughout the day. Their terrier heritage contributes spunk, curiosity, and surprising bravery. Yorkies typically alert owners to visitors with enthusiastic barking, making excellent little watchdogs.

Early socialization remains essential to develop well-adjusted adults comfortable with strangers and various situations. They generally coexist well with respectful older children and other pets when properly introduced, though tiny size necessitates supervision around young children.

This breed seeks constant human companionship and prefers households where someone is home throughout the day to provide attention and interaction.

Trainability

Training a Yorkshire Terrier requires understanding their intelligent but independent terrier nature. These dogs learn quickly but may apply selective hearing when commands lack sufficient motivation. Positive reinforcement utilizing high-value treats proves essential, as Yorkies respond reliably to food-based training methods. Early obedience training establishes essential manners and reinforces human leadership.

Housetraining often presents significant challenges requiring exceptional consistency, patience, and confinement management during the learning period. Short, engaging sessions yield better results than prolonged training. Crate training provides valuable management and security during housetraining. Their intelligence requires mental stimulation through varied activities.

With patient, consistent guidance and adequate treats, these clever companions become reasonably responsive dogs who enjoy performing for their favorite rewards, though their independent streak never completely disappears.

Grooming

The Yorkshire Terrier’s magnificent silky coat requires committed maintenance regardless of whether owners maintain the traditional floor-length show coat or practical pet trim. This single-layer coat grows continuously and resembles human hair more than typical fur, lacking an undercoat and shedding minimally.

Daily brushing proves essential for long-coated Yorkies to prevent painful mats and tangles. Many owners maintain their Yorkies in shorter “puppy cuts” for practical family life while preserving their adorable appearance. Regular bathing every one to two weeks using quality products maintains coat health and luster. The topknot, hair gathered on the head—requires daily attention to keep it free from eye irritation.

Regular dental care proves especially important for this breed prone to dental issues. Nail trimming, ear cleaning, and consistent grooming routines strengthen the bond while maintaining their beautiful appearance.
